Hey all! I am writing to ask, when or if you get a miograne, do you get really thirsty before and while you have them? and if so, why do I you get thirsty before and during a miograne? I mean when I have a miograne, all I get done is drinking water and soda! it's anoying! thanks for all of you're help guys.
yeah...me as well. i spend the whole time drinking ribena. and, i am not sure why you get thirsty. i guess it's something to do with one of the body functions or something
Sometimes certain foods or food additives can be a trigger to a migrain. That may be the case of the soda in particular if there is caffeine.
When I've a migrain I only want the amount of water needed to take a pain reliever. Just give me an extra pillow to place over my head. They sure hurt like anything don't they?
~*Thunderous MidNight*~
that is a understatment! I mean it's like, just shoot me now!
...that could produce a resulting pain more deadly
than that of a migraine.

hahaha!
oh yeah. another thing I noticed. you get really tiored after one.
It is like being so totally drained of energy
yes! I am just so tiored the next day after one!
I don't get them now. But I remember a long time ago I had them years ago. I think it was something to do with the medication I was on. It was the pill for females. But the doctor didn't believe that was the cause. But it was. I just remember this headache going on all day.
I had my first migrain episode last semester and please believe me it was the worst pain because it felt like big rocks were banging on to my head. literally it felt as if someone was beating me with a baseball bat.
this headache lasted 3 days and any over the counter painkiller did not help an any way. i took tylenal, asprin, motrin, you name it, it did nothing at all.
any noise like tv or my jfw on my computer will just burst me to tears and make it worse.
the next day i had that headache i just sat in my room and cried and sobbed uncontrolably and loudly because of the terrible pain.
also i felt alittle dizzy and off balance the next day but it was a very slight feeling of dizzyness that i did not even mention mom or the doctors.
by the next day which was the third most painful and grewling day, i went to the doctors on good friday and had to take very strong prescription meds called tylenal3 which had heavy doses of kodine which made me feel drowsy and totally lost my appetite because it threw my taste buds off totally.
that did not even help although it was a slight improvement but it was almost nothing.
the doctor suggested that if the medications don't work, then i would have to be in the hospital overnight to get very strong injectionshots of pain medication for the headache.
I am not exagerating an any way because that is what the doctor said before i started taking this ugly medication.
i did not want to spend at a hospital during easter because that is very bad.
since then when i get stressed, sometimes i get slight headaches which start off as me being alittle off balance.
so, i lay down and just chill because then if i don't do anything than i get pretty sick.
fortunately i had no classes or else i would have missed 3 days of classes if that happened at my dorm.
and that indeed wouldn't be fair to my roomate because she had to be stuck with me crying loud from pain and not even able to hear any of her music or listen to tv only because i would snap at her, lol.
i am fortunate that this occured at home.
although i almost snapped at my mom because of somthing stupid that normally wouldn't phase me in the least, but that was because the medication i was on had irritability as a side effect.
ahh, I believe you, they hurt like heck! but yes, I have become snappish as well.
oh man, i suffered 3 days from the relentless unconsolable pain of a migrain.
occasionally i get headaches that are migrainlike but are not nearly as severe as the first episode.
Is it true that if you had your first migrain, you are prone to getting them?
I'm not sure, I never heard that, however that doesn't mean it's not true.
I haven't had one in about fifteen years or so, maybe even a little longer, but I used to get what my folks and I now suspect were childhood migranes. Mine always seemed to settle over my eyes. I remember I'd get them a few times a week, and while they never lasted very long at a stretch (about half an hour or so), all the symptoms fit. It was the most excruciating pain of my life, so much so that several times it actually made me physically sick. Meant the couch had to be cleaned up a fair few times LOL. And I could always tell when one was coming on because I would quickly lose interest in whatever I was doing. There was many an evening where I'd just lay perfectly still on my parents' couch while feeling as though my brain was about to explode. Needless to say I never got much homework done on those nights.
i know that when im about to get one i feel like im off my equalibrium alittle bit.
like virtigo sometimes.
Exactly. That would happen to me too sometimes. I can't remember te last time I had one but I remeber they just stopped coming. But for a while I'd get them at least once a week and sometimes more. And you can't concentrate on ANYTHING when one of these hits you. As I said I handed in many a late homework assignment because I had to wait. Even though the episode itself never lasted long it would always leave me totally exhausted.
oh, and by saying that im off my balance like vertigo, i mean lightheadedness. unless i am wrong
i have had migraines for years and years. they are no fun that is for sure. yes, the pill can cause them. also getting ready to go in to menopause and certain times of the menstrual cycle. Sorry guys. Certain foods can be triggers such as but not limmited to chocolate, cheese, and nuts.
Have you had a test to see if what you have is actually a migraine? There are many types of headaches which can be treated differently. Just because our head hurts like a bitch doesn't mean it is a migraine. To determine if it is one, a detailed health history should be taken followed by a cat scan of the head preferably when the blessed event is happening. This shows the migrain in action.
A migraine is the constriction of blood vessels in or around the brain. Many of the meds we take address the blood vessel issue. Sometimes, a doc will give us the migraine med. If it works then you got the proglem. If it is for another type of headache, the med doesn't help.
Many guys get what are called cluster headaches. They feel similar but have a different cause and are treated differently.
if your doctor says that codine tylenol is the only thing you can take, no offense, you should divorce him. There are plenty of medications on the market with a lot less nasty side effects. Some people take imetrix, spelling, which works well but you have to always remember to eat before taking it. If you get the migraines more than a couple times a week there are meds you can take every day which can help. One of them i believe is tegratol which is also used for epilepsy.
The excedrin and motrin for migraines are also fairly good. My doc gives out the imetrix like it is diamonds or something so I'd rather take something from the drug store to avoid the expense and waste of time of going back etc.
Finally, meds can be helped if coffee or tea is drunk along with them. this enhances the effect of the pills.
Oh yes, fever few is an herb which also works well. You have to look at the label closely because the amount in varies from brand to brand. Also it's fairly easy to grow.
The key with any migrain med is to take it as soon as you feel the pain or experience the aura. That is the off balance the dizziness or whatever the presages the blessed event's arrival.
Ah yes, cluster headaches. I've also heard them referred to as suicide headaches. As a matter of fact I seem to remember that's at least partially what led to singer Gary Allan's wife's suicide. So the nickname is no surprise if the pain drives some folks to suicide. I remember reading that people can have days, weeks, months or even years of no pain and then suddenly it comes on strong again and can last at least as long as the previous reprieve.
I have to say that I haven't been actually diagnosed with having migraines, but everything that people have said here match. I will get a pain that will just pound through my entire skull. Around the eyes, the nose, the forehead, the back of the head, etc. And it's pain that most times no over the counter meds help. I take Tylenol, but that'll just reduce the pain if nothing else. I've tried Advil, Tylenol, Excedrin and even the generic stuff. Nothing seems to work. I simply have to ride it out. Lasts for about three days. The fourth day I'm usually feeling better. And I always have a desire to drink something like Pepsi. Caffeinated stuff naturally. I don't know if it helps, but most times I think it does, even a little bit.
Recently I had a bout with it and it laid me low. To the point I felt physically ill. Queasy and such. I've never had it that bad before and it kind of freaked me out.
Does anyone know what kind of doctor you go to for severe headaches like this? I'm just at the point where I feel I need to see someone. Even if they say they can't do anything for me, I need to at least investigate it.
Sometimes I get headaches constantly, little ones and then the biggies. And then sometimes I can go two or three weeks without one.
And here's something else that's extremely strange. Does it happen to anyone else? I've noticed that I'll get a severe headache even if I hit my head. You know, I'll bend down and whac my head on a chair or a table. Or, my toddler nephew will whack me with his toy. I won't bruise, no matter if it's a tap or a real good smack. But sure enough, two or three days later I'll get the most awful headache that no amount of Tylenol will help. I'm so sick of it, but I don't know what to do for them. Anyone got any advice?

Try having your primary care physician refer you to a neurologist. they'll do some scans to see if there isn't anything more sinister going on in there. Not trying to scare you, but anything's possible.
That's what I thought I would need to do. Whenever my really bad headaches crop up, I keep thinking about this story I heard. This man kept getting bad headaches. It got to the point where he was sitting at his kitchen table, a bottle of headache pills next to him. And he was just hitting his head against the table, the pain was so bad. He finally went to the doctor and found out he had a brain tumor.
For me, the headaches eventually go away and I then think everything is all right. But I still think I finally need to break down and go to see a doctor. I'm jsut worried about the medical bills. I don't have insurance, only medicare. And the last time I went to my eye dctor, I paid almost $200. And it was just for him to tell me the thing on my eyelid was a blocked oil gland and it would go away on its own! Man, that really bit me on the butt. Couldn't believe that. Sigh, anyway, off to do what I need to do.

Now there's a scary thought, but I have heard tumers can cause severe headaches.
so far i had 32 episodes of these headaches and one of them involved feeling very nausious and it occured dur right after my brother's 19 birthday. and that day i remember we were planning to go out to eat for his birthday but we couldn't cause i got sick. and my brother said "thank you for this nice birthday of mine, what a nice day, i can never do anything because something always ruins it."
My life would be worthless without Imitrex!
I have taken it on an empty stomach, and it's fine, but perhaps that depends on the amount of the dosage. I get 50mg tablets.
If you're a person who does well with Imitrex, keep one or two of the injectable kind on hand for times when the pill form won't work because of nausea.
sorry i ment to say 2 instead of 32, that was a typo. i didn't actually have 32 episodes of such headaches but i had 2.
i have major major cluster headaches. it so sucks. mine is still from the blood clot I had on my brain. When I get them nothing really helps, but sleep. I take seraquel on the days there bad and I sleep all day and night. lol! I'm a wuss when it comes to meds so it relay knocks me out. I also take methadone daily for the headaches. it's a realy small does, so it's nothing like the addicts take. They do say when you have them to drink lots of water. you really should stay away from the caffeine. you should have a scan though just to make sure nothing is going on. I have m r i's regularly to make sure the blood clot isn't coming back. cluster headaches are so nasty, and so not fun! lol
Sorry to bring this topic back to the top, but any advice on pain relief from a migraine. I just recently started getting them, oddly enough, after I started taking the Birth Control pill, and tyelinol doesn't work at all for me, nor does advill. Any advice? Is there anything you can get that works without getting a prescription?
